Aziz Mahar is a senior engineer with City of Alexandria, Virginia. He began working in the water resource engineering field in the late 1980's. He received his bachelor's degree in Agricultural Engineering from Sindh Agricultural University in Tandojam Pakistan in 1987. Initially his engineering work focused on irrigation and land drainage in Sindh. He later started graduate school in the US and completed both a M.S. in Agricultural Engineering (1993) and a Masters of Engineering in Civil Engineering (1996) from University of Idaho. Since leaving graduate school, Aziz worked for private consulting and local governments on urban drainage projects in Oregon. In addition, he worked for more than 17 years with the Washington State Department of Ecology as an engineer working on industrial and municipal wastewater projects.

As a lead engineer, he implemented the state and federal laws which included the Clean Water Act through the National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System permitting program. Currently, Aziz works as a senior engineer with the Department of Transportation and Environmental Services at the City of Alexandria, Virginia. In this role, he works as part of the multi-disciplinary team to manage flood management engineering projects which address large scale stormwater capacity issues and ongoing flooding problems. He works in the flood mitigation area to combat climate change induced flooding problems with mitigation strategies. He oversees multiple flood mitigation projects and grants to prepare the city with resilient infrastructure. He is a licensed professional civil engineer in the states of Washington and Virginia.
